Left-thumb controls include left and right pointing arrows, which determine the direction the player is facing and the direction of movement. Right-thumb controls include: hold (lift object), punch, kick, and jump. During a fight, players may be able to lift a nearby object (e.g., a dumpster or telephone booth) above their heads, releasing it to kill multiple enemies. Players can learn and upgrade combos, which are executed using one of six different control button sequences (e.g., P-P-P-P or P-K-P-K).
Combos are made up of the same individual moves as the control buttons sequence, but mix in additional moves to enhance the effectiveness of the attack (e.g., spins or feints). Each combo has several levels and cost in coins and stars. Each combo has its own characteristics, having different ratings for damage, delay, attack point, and range. Moves and combos are executed at a blinding pace, faster than real life, body movement is highly accurate and detailed, and action is augmented with realistic motion-blur.
The game’s smooth animation, effortlessly mixing cartoon-like stick figures with detailed and interactive backgrounds, and many stages of play have won it rave reviews since its original release on the Apple App Store in October 2012. The ability to upgrade weapons, combos, and skills is also much appreciated by fans.
“We worked hard on the game mechanics to make it fun to play over and over, while also a challenge to master,” explains Chambers. “As you play you earn coins that you can exchange for new combos and upgrades to your existing combos.”
The game suits an audience of 9+ with three levels of difficulty from Easy to Hard, making it ideal for causal play as well as a challenge for hardcore gamers.
